Raising Brandon – An Autism Story

The goal of all parents is to raise their children to be independent adults. Adults with jobs. Adults who live on their own. Even if  a child has special needs, the goal is the same – helping that child reach his or her full potential. There are just more obstacles to overcome along the way.

Amalia Starr started out on the journey thirty-six years ago when her son Brandon was born. Brandon has Asperger Syndrome,  untreatable epilepsy, and severe learning disorders. However, he has held jobs and lived independently for more than twelve years, thanks to his mother’s determination to stay focused on what Brandon could do, not on what he couldn’t.

To help other parents along the journey of helping a special needs child reach their full potential, even to the point of employment and independence like Brandon, Amalia works as an autism consultant, motivational speaker and author. Her book, Raising Brandon, is an autobiographical account of her journey with Brandon, from infancy, through diagnosis, and the steps she took to help him become independent.
