Jobs in Austin? – an Autism Job Request

“My autistic son, 27 yrs old, just moved to Austin Texas.  He is bilingual, drives some and has a college degree. He is desperately looking for a job. Please help us. Thank you so much.  He wants to be independent, but you know  the limitations of autism and social skills. ”

Anyone have any ideas, suggestions or offers? Please let me know and I’ll pass them on to this mom. Thanks!

  1. It is a bit hard to make suggestions without knowing what kind of job this man is looking for, and what kind of degree he has (skills). “Desperate” makes me think that right now he is looking for any job, to get some income.

If his challenges are such that he has a very hard time interviewing, he might want to disclose his Asperger’s from the start. Are there disability-friendly companies in the area? TJX Companies and Walgreens are strongly committed to hiring people with disabilities (and one can bypass the tricky personality screening questions). UPS is another company to try.

He should be clear on what personal qualities and skills he brings to an employer, and also whether he will need accommodations.

One-Stop Career Centers are government sponsored and can provide help with resumes, interviewing and finding job openings.
