Yelling Manager Creates Fear of Job – An Autism Job Story
“I did have 2 jobs. Both were at grocery stores but the thing is that I never got treated right. Not only that but my manager was mean to me. She yelled and screamed at me when I was only trying to help her out. And from then on I’ve been kinda scared to get a job. It’s one of those, I want to get a job but I don’t want to cuz I’m scared of people being mean to me and yelling at me.”
(Posted by Lauren on Job4Autism’s Facebook page. Does anyone have any suggestions for Lauren on how to overcome this fear or deal with a manager like this?)

Unfortunately this manager has very poor managent skills. I would try to understand it as her problem not yours. Any manager that yells instead of teaches is doing a poor job. Now I can’t say that there may not be jerks at hour next job but as I tell my two aspie boys, wherever you go there will always be a jerk-the trick is to not be the jerk. Also remember that everyone has troubles at work, even at several different jobs, just keep plugging away that is all anyone-even NTs do. Just try to stay positive and do what is asked of you to the best of your ability. There is nothing wrong with going out of hour way either. A good manager appreciates initiative. You just need to find the ones that do. I think you will be fine. Just don’t worry so much about the old manager. Like I said earlier she doesn’t sound like she knew her own job very well anyway. Goodluck.
Hi,
I agree, any manager that yells or belittles an employee is not a good manager.
A good manager will be clear about their expectaions on the job and will give regular evaluations to help you imporve.
A good tip is to be sure and ask any prospective work place how and when they do employee evaluations.
You might even request a short weekly eval with an immediate supervisor so you will know exactly what to work on.
The trick is to keep at the job search and keep building your resume of job experiences. The more you work the more options you will have in the future. Finding a job you enjoy AND with a good boss can be a challenge. Explore your interests and yes do rise above those who do not really know how to be good managers.
Best of luck to you in the work world and in life!
